The capital of Uruguay lies on the estuary of the 'Río de la Plata', directly opposite Buenos Aires, the Argentinian capital. Horse-drawn carriages are still seen in the narrow streets of the Old Town or 'Ciudad Vieja' and grand buildings still create the charm of Spanish colonial time. Our language school is located in the city centre in the district of Parque Rodo and is surrounded by many restaurants and shops. The vast Parque Batlle and the National library are very close. The beach is only 10 minutes by foot. Antique markets such as 'Feria or ‘Trastan Narvaja’ take place every weekend in the district. Small cafes, boutiques and galleries in the Old Town invite you to spend here a while. One of the most extra-ordinary sights in Montevideo is ’Palacio Salvo’, which was built by the Uruguayan author, Mario Benedetti, and is thought to resemble a sand castle. In the evening people meet in numerous restaurants at the harbour to enjoy typical grilled beef fillets. Before people go to bars to dance tango, they drink the typical after-dinner beverage 'Grappamiel' or hot maté tea.
