The capital city of the Aquitaine region lies in the south-western part of France and the Atlantic coast can be reached by car almost in one hour. The historic city centre, 'Vieux Bordeaux,' on the banks of the Garonne river, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its neoclassical architecture, green parks, cobbled streets and elegant boulevards. The arched bridge, Pont de Pierre, connects two banks of the well-preserved Old Town. On the boulevards you can find countless cafés, restaurants and shops. In outdoor cafés close to the Basilica of Saint-Michel, elegantly dressed French locals relish coffee. Bordeaux is famous for its fine wines and is the most renowned wine-producing region in France, with top vineyards such as Lafite Rothschild or Latour. The cultural heritage of the city is preserved in city´s museums. You should definitely visit the surrounding areas such as Saint-Émilion lying on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, where thousands of bottles of wine are stored in old catacombs.
