Viareggio is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in Tuscany. This coastal city has one of the longest, widest beaches of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and is mostly known for its colourful annual carnival. Our school in the city centre is only 5 minutes walk away from the beach. During the summer the restaurant terrasse and the beach promenade with its shops and bars are the centre of everyday life. The old promenade along the harbour is full of buildings and pavilions from the 1920s, built in an Art Deco style, attesting to the popularity of the place around the beginning of the 20th century. Two of the most noteworthy buildings from this era are the 'Gran Caffe Margherita' and the 'Grand Hotel Royal’. In Piazza Cavour it is possible to buy fresh fruit, vegetable, fish, seafood. Viareggio is the adopted homeland of Puccini and in his Villa you can learn something more about him. Local handcraft shops offers typical red pottery and fine works made of marble. The annual football tournament of the italians junior team is an institution, many of tomorrow big stars take part in this competition. Florence, Pisa and Lucca are easily reachable. A visit to the hinterland and the surrounding wineries is worthwhile.
